2-4pm: Victorian Mourning Tea
The Victorians had an obsession with death. The results of their obsession produced some of the most ornate, unusual, and beautiful examples of funerary ritual, mourning ornaments, cemeteries, and sepulchral monuments ever created. The Victorian era (1837-1901) was one of great formality. There were formal rituals for every one of life’s milestones, holidays, birthdays, weddings, but by far the most elaborate rituals were reserved for funerals, mourning and death.
Step back in time to the lush and extravagant mourning traditions of the Victorian era, when music filled the air with sweet sorrow, cherished ornate lockets held the hair of the dearly departed by paying homage to the somber beauty of the final waltz of death.
Victorian High tea complete with traditional tea
sandwiches, scones, lemon curd and desserts.
Share stories and photos of your ancestors and the beloved souls that have touched your life, as you are the result of thousands of Loves.
Enjoy the beuatiful music of The Victorian Era, taking you back to to a time when the ritual of death was revered as much as the ritual of life.
Divine the messages from the shapes of tea leaves in your cups 'witch' Lady Tara and Melissa will help you to interpret.
Add photos and mementos to our Witches Book of The Dead, a book of honour and memory to be cherished for years to come.
What to wear
Wear what is appropriate mourning clothing to your family traditon or culture. You may choose to wear Victorian garb, gothic attire, or simply all black. Whatever you feel most honours your loved ones is acceptable.
What to bring
At least one photo of your loved one(s). A single page, handwritten or printed out, with a message of Love, Devotion or memory about your loved one(s). If you would like your memento to be placed into the Book, the photo and text combined should not exceed 8.5 x 11 inches. We will also have some supplies on hand for inspiration during the tea.
The most important thing you can bring to this Victorian Mourning Tea is an open heart and open mind without expectation along with the love you hold in your heart for those that have moved across the veil. The memories we share together, will give strength and unity to all attendees, and bring about comfort and Peace in the knowing that our Loved Ones will Live on forever in our hearts, in our minds and in our Lives, via this ancient tradition.
Cost is $25 per person.
Everything mentioned above is included.
The process women had to endure during mourning was incredible. They could not leave their house for a year and a day (with the exception of church) in addition to wearing all black for at least 2 1/2 years. These clothes were specially made, and were specific to mourning. They would not be worn for any other occasion, and were to be burned after the mourning period. New mourning attire would need to be purchased for every death. Even the style, cut, and types of fabric and trims used on them had complex etiquette rules. Women had the heaviest social burden when it came to mourning. A widow would have to wear what was referred to as deep mourning for the period of at least a year and a day. Everything down to her stockings had to reflect her social status. “If she lifts her skirts from the mud, she must show by her frilled black silk petticoat and plain black stockings her grief has penetrated to her innermost sanctuaries” The Gentlewoman’s Book of Dress (c.1890. qtd. In The Victorian Undertaker 19). After the year and a day, certain other fabrics in dark purples or grays could be included in the wardrobe, but again there were complex social rules that applied. Basically it was not proper for a woman to spend less that two full years in mourning. The socially acceptable rules about what was proper to be worn in the time of mourning also included jewelry.

Sunday November 29: 12-5pm: Yule Log Workshop
"Birch into the fire goes, In sign of what the Lady knows"
In this workshop you will learn the history of the yule log and then craft one out of birch to add to your holiday traditions. Yule logs have special meaning and create a beautiful centerpiece for your table or mantle. Also included will be a Yule Log ceremony for you to share with family & friends.
We choose Birch Wood for our Yule logs because:
Birch wood is believed to ward off evil, banish fears and build courage.Associated with beauty and tolerance, the Birch's vibration heightens tolerance of oneself and others. Use a Birch Broom to brush out the old year on the morning after Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year. Add the cut bark to protection spells or drink birch beer if you feel you are under psychic attack.
Birch is the traditional Yule Log.
Traditionally, Birch twigs were used to light the Beltane fires, and couples paired off to the Birch forests. Later is when they began to make the Maypoles out of Birch, setting them up and decorating them as the focal point in the villages. The traditional broom of the Witches was made of birch twigs, and cradles were once made from birch wood for the sole purpose to protect the helpless children.
Makes a lovely Christmas/Yule gift.
$40 and includes all materials.
Please note: The time slot is the hours you can come in to create your Yule Log and you are not required to stay all day.
